eXtensible Catalog Project Update

David L. Lindahl
Web Initiatives Manager
University of Rochester

Hosted at the University of Rochester and funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and a set of institutional partners, the eXtensible Catalog (XC) Project is currently developing software that will facilitate the discovery of library resources on the Web. The software will be made available under an open source license in July 2009. XC software will provide libraries with a set of next-generation user interfaces as well as tools for managing metadata about all kinds of library resources, both digital and non-digital. XC is unlike most next-generation catalogs that are designed to stand alone and that offer limited integration with Web applications such as the library website. Starting from popular Web applications, XC will bring library metadata into Web environments natively. The eXtensible Catalog’s service-oriented architecture offers functionality built into modules that a library can mix and match. XC modules will be included to support integration with a range of popular integrated library systems, capture and distribution of user generated metadata, FRBRization of MARC and Dublin Core metadata, authority control, and integration of library content with Drupal and Blackboard. The architecture also allows libraries to create new modules that can later be shared with the open-source community. User research fieldwork is being conducted at four partner institutions to inform software development. Eight development partnerships are enabling XC compatibility with a wide variety of popular library systems and end-user environments. This update will cover the range of project activities from user research progress, to software features, development progress, and opportunities for new participation in the project.
