The IEEE/UC Project

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the University of California are working on a joint project to provide electronic access to IEEE publications to the UC community. IEEE publishes over 90 journals and magazines, 200 conference proceedings and 100 technical standards, and 75 books each year. The IEEE/UC project began in 1994 and is scheduled to run for four years. The project will focus on four areas:

• building and managing large databases of information.

• changes that occur in the use of publications when both print and electronic versions are available.

• the use and presentation of various forms of electronic text.

• the impact of electronic distribution on the Institute's membership and activities.

To evaluate the project, data will be collected on the use of the electronic documents. UC librarians, engineering faculty, and students also will be surveyed to better understand the needs and uses for engineering information in electronic form.

The IEEE/UC project is being implemented in phases. In phase one, users will be able to view and print bitmapped images from IEEE journal and conference publications using X-windows technology. The second phase will allow users to print these images directly from the MELVYL system, without viewing them first, and without requiring the user to have software that supports the X-protocol. Subsequent phases augment the bitmapped images with SGML materials and provide access via the World Wide Web.
