Becoming a NISO Participant

Who can Participate in NISO?

Membership in NISO is open to any organization willing to participate in and having substantial concern for and competence in the scope of NISO:

To develop standards relevant to information systems,
products, and services as they relate to libraries, information
     services and publishing.

Participation may take the form of Voting Membership, participating in committee work, supporting NISO as an Information Associate, as a subscriber to NISO publications, or as a contributor of resources.

Benefits of NISO Voting Membership

NISO is the only organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain technical standards for information services, libraries, publishers, and others involved in the business of the creation, storage, preservation, sharing, accession and dissemination of data.

Participate in the development, revision, and evaluation of standards

Voting members take part in standards committees and they have the opportunity to comment on as many developing standards as they wish to. Their vote will significantly influence the direction of standards work.

Keep abreast of new and proposed standards

All voting members are notified of the status of current NISO committee work. This allows members to refer technical matters to their internal experts, or to interested third parties, to assure that NISO standards will work for all parties involved.

Receive free copies of NISO standards

Free copies of NISO standards will be shipped to voting members as part of their participation benefits. If you purchase standards on a regular basis, this will be an important benefit for your organization.

Make an important statement to your constituency

Participation in the work of NISO tells the professional community that you care about the profession at large. Not only do you make an important public relations statement, you are also provided with ample opportunity for networking with those who, like you, care about making information work for everyone.

Display the official NISO Voting Member seal

NISO will provide all voting members with a gold seal that marks the booths of all official voting members for display at professional meetings. You will also be entitled to place the NISO seal in your advertising and promotional literature. The seal identifies your organization as one which plays an important role in developing and applying professional information standards.
