A project to assist the higher education community in understanding, describing, and promoting institution-wide strategies for networked information resource and service development across five major dimensions: technology platforms, financial resources, organizational and human resources, policies and practices, and strategic alignment.

A project to field test measures of the impact of networks and networked information resources on higher education institutions.
- Access to and Services for Federal Information in a Networked Environment
A white paper to guide higher education and other institutions, such as public and state libraries, in the development of strategies for providing access to and services for federal government information using the powerful and rapidly expanding global information infrastructure.
- Cost Centers and Measures in the Information Value Chain
A project to establish a widely understood and accepted frame of reference for monitoring cost effects and managing cost claims, and to set a firm and visible foundation for addressing cost questions in the future.
- New Learning Communities
A project to recognize and encourage leading edge examples of courses and curricula that incorporate the use of networks and networked information in higher education.
- Humanities and Arts on the Information Highways
An initiative sponsored by CNI, the Getty Art History Information Program, and the American Council of Learned Societies, designed to address the urgent need for the humanities and arts to gain a voice in the planning and development of the National Information Infrastructure, the much-publicized plan for a national telecommunications system.
- Teaching and Learning via the Network
A collection of projects that use networking and networked information resources and services in the broadest possible ways to support and enhance teaching and learning, in cooperation with the New Learning Communities project.
- Consortium for University Printing and Information Distribution (CUPID)
An informal and open consortium of universities interested in the distributed printing over the Internet of finished, high-quality, production documents and defining a suite of protocols and services that can be used as the foundation for a variety of applications related to printing and distribution.
- Development of Cost/Benefit Analysis of Alternative Models for the GPO WINDO Legislative Proposal
A project organized by the Coalition Working Group on Access to Public Information with the American Library Association to develop cost/benefit analyses of alternative models for the proposed Government Printing Office Wide Information Network Data Online (GPO WINDO) Act. The primary purpose of this project was to provide data and analyses to the policymakers considering the GPO WINDO proposal.
- Rights for Electronic Access to
and Delivery of Information (READI)
A project undertaken by CNI and Robert Ubell Associates to explore whether and how contract law, in the form of licenses and related agreements between creators and users of published works, could be applied within the context of copyright law to ease the flow of networked information. The particular objective was to determine whether it is possible to develop a common set of terms and conditions for managing relationships in the emerging market for networked information.
