"Public Service Media, Old and New: Vitalizing a Civic Culture ?"
Montreal, September 14, 1998
According to Professor Peter Dahlgren, public broadcasting can not be
reduced to solely financial and technocratic questions. Professor
Dahlgren is proposing that a civic or public culture must be realized
as a key component of public broadcasting within a democratic society.
At the third annual Graham Spry Memorial Lecture, Professor Dahlgren
will discuss the current trends in public broadcasting and the future
directions it can and should take. This lecture will be held at
Universite de Montreal on October 15, at 4pm.
Professor Peter Dahlgren is a highly recognized scholar in the study
of mass media and communication. He has written extensively on the
fundamental role of the mass media and journalism in the development of
a democratic public sphere. He is the author of the highly acclaimed
book "Television and the Public Sphere" and of two important collections
of critical essays : "Journalism and Popular Culture" and "Communication
and Citizenship". His current research focuses on the Internet as a
journalistic resource and possible basis for the foundation of a new
civic culture.
