Greetings:
Some will recall that one of my Center's activities has been
to provide some of my time to teaching a pilot course called
Computer Lab/Shop (C L/S) open to students grades 6-12.
We were switching superintendents this summer and the outgoing
superintendent made sure it got launched before he left.
The new superintendent has been very cooperative and largely from
a push by our Technology Committee chair, we have new space where
each student is assigned their own project carrel. Also, the space
has its own outside entrance, making possible off-hour use with
Internet video supervision.
We are moving our community volunteer coordination server to
the site, and the students will be able to create their own
intranet as well as build off of the web and telephony applications
that are in field test. Connected to the school's T-1 line, we
will soon open this up for others to try.
And, as we get "project machines" in place, we will be recruiting
students to join C L/S who have more of an interest in graphics
and content. Some of the C L/S students will continue building out
the hardware and software, while others will work on web pages and
"Active Server Page" access to content databases (such as the volunteer
service "databank.") We will also be adding an NT-based "MOO" for
creating "student offices" and virtual mentoring spaces.
If there are any questions about this pilot, I'd be pleased to reply.
Regards,
Curtiss
