GOVERNOR CARL T.C. GUTIERREZ OF GUAM TO GIVE OPENING ADDRESS
AT GLOBAL LEARN DAY II
Governor Carl T. C. Gutierrez of Guam will be the first speaker on
Global Learn Day II, a worldwide event on October 11 featuring the elite
of distance education.
Global Learn Day II will be "part expedition, part exhibition, part
experiment and all conference" according to Linda Riddell communications
director for the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Global Education who
organize the event.
Gutierrez, 56, is completing his first term as Guam's Chief Executive
in which he dramatically cut government debt by two thirds, broadened
the island's $3 billion dollar a year economic base and when Super
Typhoon Paka struck last December (packing winds in excess of 200 miles
per hour, causing $500 million in damages), he lead the fastest recovery
in history.
As a long time and distinguished legislator and business leader,
Gutierrez has championed education; and since becoming Governor in 1994,
has added more than half a dozen more major schools for the island's
(eliminating classroom overcrowding) with more new schools coming on
line later this year.
The Governor has also been spearheading the rapid introduction of state
of the art computerization in all Guam's schools (in the mid 60s, he was
responsible for computerizing government operations) and operating under
his Vision 2001 plan a comprehensive road map for the future the
Governor plans to continue expanding educational facilities, resources
and opportunities for the island's 150,000 people.
