Attached is a job description for a new position here at the SPIN
Project. The Project, only 18 months old, continues to grow and provide
more media training and strategizing assistance to grassroots and
national organizations. We are seeking another full-time trainer and
media strategist. Qualifications include good media experience, the
politics, grassroots sensitivity and a love for teaching and helping.
It's a great job with a fast-growing project that benefits a lot of

MEDIA TRAINER/PUBLIC RELATIONS SPECIALIST SOUGHT

The SPIN Project, a media training and technical assistance project for
non-profit, public interest groups, seeks a media trainer and public
relations specialist.

        The SPIN Project, now in its second year, works with grassroots
and national organizations advocating on a variety of progressive
issues, including economic justice, environmental justice, reproductive
freedom, civil rights, immigrant rights, affirmative action, welfare
reform, gay and lesbian equality, campaign finance reform, and more. We
provide in-the-field media training and ongoing media strategizing
assistance.

        The media trainer/public relations specialist will provide
training and strategic media assistance to national and grassroots
groups around the nation. The specialist will conduct media trainings,
facilitate strategic media planning sessions, maintain ongoing
relationships with community groups, provide regular media consultation,
develop and provide media resources and publications, and help grow the
capacity of organizations to do more media. This is an advanced
position requiring significant and proven media expertise plus
experience working with grassroots political organizations.

        Qualified applicants must have a minimum five years professional
media experience with national and local press or equivalent background;
demonstrated success at conceiving and implementing media campaigns and
press plans, including staging media events, placing stories and framing
issues; at least three to five years experience working with political
groups, including an understanding of grassroots organizational
"culture;" experience or a desire to teach media tactics. Knowledge of
the issues is important.

        Other important qualifications include excellent written and
oral communications skills as well as teaching skills; internet
literacy; the ability to work with diverse groups of people covering an
array of issues; and a willingness to travel extensively.

The SPIN Project is part of the Independent Media Institute (formerly
the Institute for Alternative Journalism). Women and people of color
are strongly encouraged to apply. Salary $35,000-45,000 plus full
