I've been invited to be on a Florida radio talk show
called "Critical Time" this Saturday.
GTE is a major employer in Tampa Florida, and they are
interested in the proposed acquisition of GTE by Bell
Atlantic.
The host is also interested in the general question of
monopolies and the impact on the work force of GTE.
I would greatly appreciate members of the list to
respond to this issue -- in brief terms -- remember we
are talking about "sound bytes."
Here are some questions:
1. What will be the impact of a Bell Atlantic / GTE merger ?
a. Impact on workers
b. Impact on competition, prices and innovation
2. Does the 1996 Telecom Reform Act make such a merger illegal
based on the requirement that long line carriers such as AT&T must
be permitted into local markets before baby bells can expand into
long lines?
3. What about this era in general? Why are there so many mergers
and buyouts of tremendous size and is this a good sign for the economy
and for the worker?
Regards,
Curtiss
