Wired for Census 2000
Exactly how wired is the nation? Reps. Rick White (R-Wash.)
and Dan Miller (R-Fla.) want to know. The congressmen have
introduced legislation that would add questions about computers
and Internet use to the 2000 census form. "We've been asking
questions about whether people have inside plumbing. Now we
should try to be forward-looking," said White, whose home
district includes the headquarters of Microsoft Corp. in
Redmond, Wash.
As directed by the measure, the Census Bureau would add two
questions to the survey's more comprehensive "long form," which
is mailed to every sixth household in most neighborhoods. The
questions would be: 1) Does your household have a personal
computer? and 2) Is your household currently connected to the
Internet through a personal computer or other device?
White said a hearing on the proposal could come as early as
this week.
