Craig.
I think the 40% figure is misleading when it comes to telcommuncaitons.
That figure refers to the % of the population which has a computer at
home. Only about 25% of that pouplation has computers with modems so
the actual telecommuncitons equipped computeres is much smaller. Also
you are quite right that there are wireless alterntaives and cable and
much cheaper access devices that facilitate internet access and I assume
e mail.
Going back to your point about the unreality of typing as a
communications mode for most people. I would not denigrate broad pipes
into the home as the ultimate goal of our information society. The most
natural way to communicate is visually and audio. So ultimately it is
a video communciaton which we want to move towards. Also this is
essential for accessing health care services in the home in order to
see your doc or nurse pratitioner or therapist "on the box" as it were.
Most other applications require video to be reallye ffective. But I
agree that we have to look at a range of interim options to get everyone
compfortable with this new digital world always keeping the ultimate
objective in mind whether its cable, wireless or fiber. Mary
