Josh Shenk's piece on the current state of the corporate vision of
the future I-Net is well written, informative, clear, well-researched,
and balanced in tone. I like his clear statement of the problem (the
telecomm industry has put$50 million into conressional coffers since
1983, and therefore none of our preoccupations about many-to-many and
democratic, educational, and cultural (multicultural) uses of the net
are being even given lip service), but his reasonable assumption that
if we are strong and unremitting in our efforts, we may be able to
spare the essence of what we have now, and keep the capitalists from
killing the best hope I have seen in my lifetime for freedom of
communication and its concomitant possibility for bringing issues and
solutions long ignored by the powers that control American life into
the minds of millions.
