	       OPPORTUNITIES AND RISKS FOR CITIZENSHIP
		       AND SOCIAL COHESION

THE INSTIGATORS, IN BRIEF...

The Foundation for the Progress of Humanity (FPH) is a fondation
subject to Swiss law, founded in 1982 and presided by Pierre Calame.
Its activities and work of reflection and discussion focus on the links
between the accumulation of knowledge and human progress in seven
areas : the future of the planet, the meeting of cultures, innovation and
social change, the relations between the State and society, the
farmers'modernisation programme, the fignt against social exclusion and
the building of peace. FPH works with partners from very different
sectors (associations, administrations, companies, researchers,
journalists, etc.) and organises debate on the conditions of production
and use of knowledge in the service of those who have least access to it.
It instigates meetings and joint working programmes, offers a
standardised system of information exchange, supports work that
capitalises on previous experience and publishes or co-publishes works
and documents.

Transversales Science Culture, a bi-monthly newletter published since 1990,
seeks beyond the barriers between the different sciences and the chasm that
is opening between Science and Culture. It attempts to initiate responses
to the issues raised, from one horizon of the planet to the other, by the
generalised crisis affecting the individual, society and the environment.
Its streering Committee is composed of: Andre Bourguignon, Jean Chesneaux,
Dominique Genelot, Michel Herve, Anne Brigitte Kern, Roger Lesgards, Jena-Paul
Marechal, Gerard Mendel, Edgar Morin, Rene Passet, Armand Petitjean,
Riccardo Petrella, Martine Remond-Gouilloud, Jacques Robin, Joel de Rosnay,
Jacques Testart, Patrick Viveret.
