On the issue of the role of RHC's and cable, it is my
understanding that Pressler basically jumped the gun on an underlying
idea that he has, and then basically "mis-spoke." This is not from
any truly "inside" information, but more from reading and then talking
to a few folks.
The Pressler/Republica agenda seems to be to try and "privatize"
CPB by creating some form of private, quais-governmental entity that
would eventually be totally private....but does not necessarily have to
change its mission. One variation on that would be for a set of
corporations to pony up the equivalent of the Government contribution
and in return have seats on the CPB board, and perhaps involvement in
other entitites.
I am NOT defending it, but it would be useful to understand what
they are thinking. Of coiurse,t here are a number of people who simply
want to eliminate CPB/PBS etc. In any case, my understanding is that
Pressler was trying to figure out someway to move CPB/PBS to a privately
funded enterprise, with essentially its current mission.
