There are a little over a dozen people subscribed to ROUNDTABLE@CNI.ORG.
This note and others, and some subscriptions, were delayed in processing
because the Unix-Listprocessor was shutdown for a couple days.
On the afternoon of Wednesday January 19, the mayor of the District of
Columbia issued an executive order closing all non-essential businesses
and services in the District. The Federal Government also closed. Both
actions were done at the request of power companies in the mid-Atlantic
region. The power companies were having difficulty maintaining voltages
on all of their circuits during the extremely cold weather that the
Eastern United States has been experiencing. In order to avoid massive
failures, the local company -- PEPCO, was performing 'rolling blackouts'
in the few days prior to the time the mayor's executive order went into
force. Our mail server experienced power outages twice on Monday and
Tuesday, thus making reliability of service difficult.
As a result, I shutdown the Unix-Listprocessor for about 36 hours until
the situation stabilized. PEPCO says they have the situation under control
now, and I have re-started the list server.
