---------------------------------------------------------------------

A discussion list for the Advanced Search Facility has been
established at the Coalition for Networked Information. (Our thanks
to Craig Summerhill!) Here's an excerpt from its description--

ABOUT THE ASF FORUM:

The purpose of the Advanced Search Facility is to provide an
efficient means for gathering and indexing information on the Internet.
ASF supports automatic indexing of the content of sites, to include
contents of GILS-compliant locators. ASF includes a gatherer service,
broker service, indexer, and a query processor. The gatherer extracts
documents by following Web and FTP links and by using Z39.50 search
and retrieve facilities. The broker collects gathered information
from many gatherers. The indexer indexes documents and creates GILS
locator records. The query processor supports full-text, fielded
Boolean, and proximity queries, including spatial queries.

The ASF Forum is a public, moderated computer forum open to anyone
interested in discussing development, implementation, deployment,
and technical issues surrounding the Advanced Search Facility (ASF).
The ASF Forum provides the opportunity for implementors, information
providers, information intermediaries, librarians, public interest
groups, the public, and other organizations to participate in
discussions related to the ASF. The ASF Forum will also announce and
provide electronic access to documents related to the ASF.
