Subject: Summary of 1/22/97 Meeting of the OIW GILS SIG

Summary of the 1/22/1997 Meeting of the OIW GILS Special Interest Group,
held at the National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, DC

Organizations represented: Dept. of Health and Human Services, Dept. Of
Interior/U.S. Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency, Garcia
Consulting, Inc., Government Printing Office, National Archives and
Records Administration, National Labor Relations Board

GILS Server Software Issues

The group reviewed the history of WAISserver and discussed USGS efforts
to obtain source code for latest version. USGS is working on agreements
so they could make versions ported to other platforms available via FTP.
Benefit of latest version is solid compliance with Z39.50 protocol. The
group also discussed other software products, and the Advanced Search
Facility project.

Organizational Relationships of the GILS SIG

The group discussed the relationship of the SIG to the old SIG for
Networked Information Discovery and Retrieval, which was part of the
Federation of Government Information Processing Councils (FGIPC).
The group discussed both pros and cons of having a second parent
organization (in addition to OIW).

GILS Evaluation Status and Directions

The currently planned schedule is for the GILS evaluation team to present
summarized results of the evaluation to the GILS SIG on April 22, and share
important lessons learned that can be applied to individual agencies', and
departments', GILS implementations. The evaluation appears to be on track
and on schedule.

GILS Profile Version 2

The group discussed the latest issues relating to '+author', and
'+contributor',.

GILS and other Z39.50 Profiles, SIG Work Priorities

The group decided to defer until a later meeting a detailed discussion of
the relationships between the GILS profile and other Z39.50 profiles.
Detailed discussion of SIG work priorities was also postponed for lack
of time.

Conceptual Architecture for the US Federal GILS

The group discussed the desirability of creating some simple pictures of
the US Federal GILS that could, collectively, be considered as a
conceptual architecture. These pictures might be useful in communicating
and clarifying the scope of GILS. A group of SIG members agreed to meet,
draft a set of pictures, and share them at the next SIG meeting.

Logistics and Main Topics for Next Meeting

The next meeting of the GILS SIG will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday,
February 25, 1997 at the Department of Health and Human Services in
Washington, DC. Discussion may center around some draft pictures of
an "overall conceptual architecture" for GILS, and the GILS evaluation
conducted by OMB Watch. Other topics are welcome. Please contact
Steve Hufford if you have additional topics to propose.

We will meet in Room 403A, in the Hubert H. Humphrey Building. The street
address is 200 Independence Ave. (at the corner of 3rd and Independence),
which is two blocks north of the Federal Center, SW Metro stop. You
