This note is in response to a message that was posted to the list GOVDOC-L
(copied below). The message concerns the requirement placed on the 1,380
Federal Depository Libraries to provide Internet access with "GILS-aware
software".

While the GILS Application Profile specifies what servers must do to be
GILS-compliant, the profile does not have compliance requirements for client
software. Quoting from the soon-to-be-published article on GILS in the
December D-Lib magazine:

Any client software capable of access to a server compliant with Z39.50
version 2 or 3 can access GILS-
compliant servers. Extra capability is provided by GILS-aware clients such
as the BookWhere 2000 <http://www.bookwhere.com/prodesc.htm#SCBW2000>
product from Sea Change Corporation, and products under development such as
SIRSI Vizion <http://www.sirsi.com/Products/vizz3950.html> and the new Java
client being developed by Blue Angel Technologies <http://www.bluangel.com>.

These and other relevant GILS software offerings are listed at
<http://www.usgs.gov/gils/software.html>
