GILS CONFERENCE
NATIONAL ARCHIVES AT COLLEGE PARK
November 13-14, 1996
TRANSPORTATION NOTICE
The 1996 GILS Conference has proven to be a popular event. In fact, it
will be the biggest event held in the National Archives at College Park
(Archives II) since the building opened. Therefore, there will be some
special transportation measures taken to help everyone arrive on time for
the sessions.
PARKING
There are only 120 parking places available at Archives II for GILS
conference participants. Since there are more than 350 registrants, we
are urging participants to either car pool, park in the off-site lot, take
public transportation, or use the shuttle service provided by your hotel.
Here are the options:
Car pool: We would prefer to use the on-site parking spaces
for car pools and for handicapped participants although the spaces will
be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. If the majority of spaces are
used by participants in car pools there will be no parking problems, but
plan to arrive by 8:00 in case all of the spaces are filled and you need to
go to off-site parking.
Off-site Parking: We have arranged off-site parking at the Prince
George?s Plaza Metro station. The station is approximately two miles
from the conference site. Parking costs $1.00. See public
transportation instructions, below, for information on how to get to
Archives II from the Metro lot. Please plan to arrive at the lot by 8:15 so
you have enough time to get to the conference site.
Directions: The entrance to the parking lot is on Belcrest Road, between
Queens Chapel Road and East West Highway.
>From downtown D.C. it?s about a 30 minute drive. Take North Capitol
Street to Michigan Ave., turn right. Cross the Maryland line; Michigan
Ave. becomes Queens Chapel Rd. Turn left on Belcrest Rd. (a fire
house will be on your left) and then turn left into the first entrance to the
Metro parking lot.
>From the Archives II turn left onto Adelphi Rd. and proceed for
approximately two miles to Belcrest Rd, turn right (immediately after
passing Northwestern High School). Cross East West Highway and turn
right into the second entrance to the Metro lot.
Public Transport: The Prince George?s Plaza station is on the Metro
Green line.
The R-3 Metrobus runs every half-hour from the Metro station. Go up the
escalator from the platform and then turn right and go to bus stop AA.@
Take the R-3 bus marked AGreenbelt.@ You will arrive on-time if you
take the 7:30, 8:00, or 8:30 bus. The cost is $1.10. Buses leave
Archives II to return to the Metro station in the evening at 4:51, 5:24, and
5:54. Please go to the conference information desk for the full schedule
of mid-day and other buses.
NARA has arranged for a supplementary shuttle service to run
continuously between the Metro station and the conference site. The
van will be marked "National Archives" and will be at the shuttle bus stop
across from the R-3 bus stop. The van capacity is limited so it cannot be
the only conveyance from the station; most participants should plan on
using the Metrobus.
A NARA staff member will be on the bus platform to assist participants in
finding their way.
Hotel Shuttle: Participants who are staying at the Holiday Inn
College Park or the Ramada Limited Calverton should use the free
shuttles provided by the hotels. You must inform the registration desk
the day before that you intend to use the shuttle because the hotels will
have to be make special arrangements.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. If you have
any questions, please call NARA?s GILS line on 301-713-7100, ext. 255
or send e-mail to <gils@arch2.nara.gov>.
