Subject: GILS Profile version 2 approved


I understand that the GILS Profile version 2 was approved at the recent
meeting in Brussels of the Open Systems Environment Implementors Workshop
(OIW), Special Interest Group on Library Applications (SIG-LA). I also
understand that the OIW/SIG-LA has turned over maintanance of the GILS
Profile to the new OIW Special Interest Group on GILS (SIG-GILS).

I would like to thank all of you who contributed to the work on version 2,
and especially Bill Moen. Although it lasted nearly two years, I thought 
the entire process was open, deliberate, and consensual.

Lest we be tempted to "rest on our laurels" I would like to offer a
provactive suggestion: Should we base the GILS Profile version 3 on 
Z39.50 version 3?
