Subject: GILS Profile Version 2 Changes

Since July, there have been discussions on the GILS list about various
changes that are needed in the GILS Profile Version 2
<http://www.usgs.gov/gils/prof_v2.html>.

In this message, I attempt to summarize the changes that have been made
in response to those discussions. Please let me know if I have missed
anything, or if I have erred in the way I attempted to accomplish any
of the changes.

At this point in time, the only outstanding issues of which I am aware
are some additional subelements being suggested by North Carolina.

(1) The paired subelements "linkage" and "linkageType" are repeatable
together, and are now treated the same whether as components of
"availableLinkage" or of "crossReferenceLinkage". In the pairing, the
"linkageType" subelement is not repeatable but the "linkage" subelement
is repeatable. These changes have been accomplished mainly by changes
to these subelements as shown in the GILS Abstract Record Structure in
Annex D and by adding the following sentences to the definitions of
Available Linkage and Cross Reference Linkage in Annex E: "This
subelement consists of the subordinate elements Linkage Type and Linkage.
It must be repeated for every new instance of Linkage Type." I also
dropped GILS Use Attribute 2048, Cross Reference Linkage Type, in Annex
A and changed the USMARC cross-walk for Cross Reference Linkage shown in
Annex B.

(2) The subelements "availableTimeStructured" and "availableTimeTextual",
as well as their parent subelement "availableTimePeriod", were listed as
repeatable. The subelements of availableTimePeriod should have been
parallel to the element "timePeriod" which is repeatable itself while
its component subelements "timePeriodStructured" and timePeriodTextual"
are both non-repeatable. Also, the subelements "timePeriodStructured"
and "availableTimeStructured" have been changed to be repeatable
compounds, each consisting of the non-repeatable subelements
"beginningDate" and "endingDate".

(3) The element "languageOfResource" was changed to be repeatable in
Annex D and the definition was modified accordingly in Annex E.

(4) The element "originator" was changed to be repeatable in Annex D
and in Annex E.

(5) In Annex E, the phrase "other related information resources" has now
been added to the definition of the "Cross Reference" element.

(6) In the GILS Abstract Record Structure in Annex D, placeKeyword was
shown as "not repeatable", although it was correctly shown in Annex E as
repeatable. Annex D has now been corrected

(7) There was typo in the element "distributorTelephone" (the second
"e" was missing) in the GILS Abstract Record Structure in Annex D.
