This isn't the greatest definition but it's one that I use.
Are you looking for a definition that would explain to your
users a new service or one that would justify the need for
a new service?  This isn't the greatest of definitions but
it's one that I use to keep perspective.

E-reserves  1: any electronic system that provides access to
printed matter a) digitized text b) a catalog of materials
3) automated access services 2: to place printed materials
into a form that a computer can use 3: to store, retrieve,
and process electronically.
