I have worked with booking systems that allowed for reserving an item
for a particular time and day. The system took into account the loans
policy, for example booking for overnight loan as against booking for
one hour loan or two hour loan. The system also took into account
"grace periods" - if the student is allowed a 15 minute grace period
for returning the item. Generally the sytem worked well with most of
the heat being directed to slow returners rather than library staff.
Certainly students appreciated being able to plan their work ahead
knowing that materials would be available. In designing the sytem you
need to be able to block a student reserving more items for the same
loan period than they are allowed to borrow at once but also permit the
early return and use of an subsequent reservation. For example if you
have two hour loans do you want to allow a student reserve an item for,
say 1pm and another item for 2pm? The other setting that is required
is how long the reservation can remain in force past the due time, that
is, if the student does not show to collect the item.
Does all this make ereserve sound easier?
Dick
