##ARL Announces...

major findings of the ARL ANNUAL SALARY SURVEY 1994

The median salary for academic librarians is $41,000; the
beginning professional salary is $26,000. These salary levels represent
a 10% increase in the purchasing power of academic librarians since1985.
In nonuniversity research libraries the median salary is $48,000, which
is a slight decrease in adjusted dollars since 1985; the beginning
salary is $27,800, which is an 18% increase in real dollars. These are
some of the results from the just published ARL Annual Salary Survey
1994, a comprehensive compilation of data covering over 12,000
professional library positions in 119 U.S. andCanadian research
libraries.

Gordon Fretwell, University of Massachusetts, compiler of the
survey for ARL, highlights recent trends in his introduction. He points
out that the purchasing power of librarians' salaries has increased, that
librarian salaries in private universities continue to exceed those paid
in publicly supported institutions, and that, in general, the larger the
library staff, the higher the salaries.

The publication presents tabular information on gender and
minority distribution, i.e.:

* Of the 104 filled directorships in ARL university libraries, 65 are
held by men (62%) and 39 are held by women (38%).

* Of the 724 minority staff in ARL university libraries (11% of all
professional staff), 205 are men and 518 are women.

* ARL Annual Salary Survey 1994 also includes sections on:

Canadian libraries (Tables 25 to 28)
Medical libraries (Tables 29 to 35)
Law libraries (Tables 36 to 42)

Tables display average, median, and beginning professional
salaries for two fiscal years, 1994 and 1995, to facilitate comparisons
from year to year. Average salaries are also displayed by position,
experience, sex, race, geographic region, and size of library.
